If you've already visited Paris, you surely have admired the old remaining métro that are still in function and that have been transporting passengers for over a century now.
However, the metro, as we know it, is about to evolve due to the technical progress it experiences.
Still, do you know the history of the Parisian métro?

The first subway/underground ever inaugurated was the one in London, in 1862 : the Tube.
Then, followed the opening of the subway in New York.
The parisian metro is positionned in the line of the ones in Vienna,Boston, Budapest, Glasgow, Chicago, New York and London.

As Paris grow bigger in terms of space as well as in population, one idea emerged in order to ease the traffic in the whole city : building the metro.
It also became a priority since Paris had been chosen to welcome the World Fair at that time.

Today's métro has 300 lines in function which makes it the third leader in terms of underground transportation in Europe, just after Barcelona and London.
One of the main particularity of the parisian métro is that each métro stop is located at less than 500 meters from the other, which is practical for people who do not like to walk a lot.
The underground subway is currently the fastest means of transport.
The metro is divided into two types of transportation, the automatic one (without a driver, only relying on computering system) and the old one who still has a driver.
Yet, the main project is the conception of the "Great Paris" which consists in an expansion of the métro by adding more stops to some métro lines and automating every lines.

The underground is the most adaptable means of transport : it starts at half past 5 a.m and ends at 1 a.m or 2 a.m on the weekend.
After the year's end celebrations, the métro is usually even in function the whole night until the early morning.
As for the métro tickets, in Paris, they are pretty much affordable.
However, we advise you to buy your tickets on an automatic teller machine , located near to the entrance of the métro, since buying it in the bus will cost you more.
You can also find a map of the métro in each underground station.
